What a Story for This Duke Team.

A couple of weeks ago it seemed that Duke's ACC Championship hopes were all but extinguished after an uncharacteristic poor offensive display in a 34-17 loss to Virginia at home.

Little did the Devils know, they'd get another crack at the Cavaliers in Charlotte.

There is quite a bit of discourse in the college football world about how a five loss Duke team making it to the ACC title game over a 10-2 Miami team is bad for the ACC. Basically implying that if Duke were to beat Virginia, there's a possibility that the committee would consider putting an 11-1 JMU team into the playoff who won the Sun Belt Championship over Troy last night.

Regardless of whether or not that actually happens, it's stuff like that that is absolutely sucking the fun out of college football for so many people.

This is an incredible story and moment for Duke football that should be appreciated. Their first trip to the ACC title since 2013 and a chance to win their first one since, believe it or not, sharing the title with Virginia back in 1989. The last time the Devils won it outright was 1962.

Now to the actual game.

When Virginia met Duke in Wallace Wade Stadium three weeks ago, they completely neutralized Darian Mensah and took their offense out of the game which has been their weapon this year.

Since then, though, Duke has put 32 points on Bill Belichick's defense in Chapel Hill and, more importantly, 49 points on one of the better defenses in the ACC in Jake Dickert's Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

What I’m getting at is that despite having only three points going into the fourth quarter against Virginia the first time, Duke’s offense can hang with anybody in this conference on any given day.

It’s also extremely difficult to beat a team twice, especially over the course of three weeks, if you’re Virginia.

I think tonight is an epic back-and-forth game like we were hoping we would get just three weeks ago in Wallace Wade Stadium. In the end, I think Dukes discipline that they have kept and continue to build on, even after they thought, their ACC title chances were shattered, will lead them to their first outright ACC championship win since 1962.

Regardless of how it affects the ACC in the College Football Playoff, this is an incredible moment and story for the Duke Blue Devils.
