NBA players typically find success because of the systems and teams they're on. We can look at a long list throughout history and see that most guys are only as good as their teams are. That typically isn't the case for star players, though even some stars benefit from having great teams around them. No star has ever won with a bad supporting cast.
When teams draft in the top five, in most classes, they're looking for a franchise-altering player. Whoever selects Cameron Boozer, assuming he goes in the top three or four, like everybody is expecting him to as of now, is hoping that he has the goods to be a superstar in this league one day.
That's why it's almost crazy to suggest that he could end up with the Oklahoma City Thunder, though it definitely isn't as crazy as it might sound. Boozer would really benefit from being on a star-studded roster like Oklahoma City.
He probably won't end up there, but some writers are suggesting that it isn't as crazy as it might sound due to all of the assets Oklahoma City has in its pool of picks.
“In what is widely regarded as a stacked draft class, there's a case to be made that if Oklahoma City hypothetically had the pick of the litter, a guy like Cameron Boozer would be their first choice. Tabbed as the number one player on our very own Thunder draft big board, the big man's fit out in the Sooner State is simply too logical, especially if they opt to part ways with Isaiah Hartenstein in an effort to try and duck under the dreaded second apron next season…
“Fortunately, on a team like the Thunder, which has three established All-Defensive talents and the recent runner-up for DPOY in Chet Holmgren in tow, there are more than enough players to make up for any lapses he may have on this end,” Mark Nilon of FanSided wrote.
The defensive part here is what makes everything very interesting.
If Boozer has any struggles in the NBA, some think it will be on that side of the basketball. I don't think he'll have many defensive problems unless he doesn't play his primary position, but no matter where he plays in Oklahoma City, he'd be around a bunch of star-studded defenders who move their feet well and work on that side of the basketball.
Now, even with how many picks Oklahoma City has, it still might not be very realistic, but it's definitely fun to think about.
