A college football analyst believes Duke head coach Manny Diaz is a good fit for the Florida State job if it becomes open.
The Duke football team entered their bye week with a 4-0 record, completing their non-conference portion of the schedule. But they faced a tough stretch ahead with two of their next three games on the road, all against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents.
And the first test was failed by Duke.
The Blue Devils fell to Georgia Tech on Saturday afternoon, giving up the lead late and then missing a potential game-tying field goal with just seconds left. The loss was the first on the season for Duke, as they are now 4-1 going into this week's matchup against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
For Duke, the focus is on this week and getting back on track. But even with that, there's a little buzz surrounding head coach Manny Diaz. He's been fantastic this season so far, building off of what they accomplished last season. He's doing it with a transfer-portalRE quarterback in Walker Eget.
Diaz earning praise is a good thing but recently a former player and now a current analyst had a interesting thing to say about the head coach.
On3 analyst J.D. PicKell discussed the Florida State situation down in Tallahassee as the Seminoles are 3-3 following a loss to Louisville last week. It appears as if Mike Norvell's time at Florida State could be coming to an end and the Seminoles could be in line to find their next head coach.
Could that be Diaz?
PicKell mentioned Diaz as a possible good fit for the Seminoles after what he has accomplished at Duke. Following a disappointing end at Miami, Diaz has resurrected his career in Durham.
He goes on to say that Diaz knows the region of Florida due to his time at Miami, which should help in recruiting. But the fact that Diaz is a defensive guy is also a plus. The Seminoles went with Norvell, who is more of an offense-minded head coach, and it's time to go in a different direction.
Now, this is just one analysts' opinion. BUT he also does note that he believes Diaz would not take the job but at the very least, Florida State has to make the call and show interest.
The Florida State situation is something to monitor in the college football world. And if they are ready to make a change, Diaz's name will continue to keep coming up. The success he's found at Duke will lead to that and it's a good thing.
