College football and the whole NIL situation nowadays make for some interesting conversations. I am of the belief that these players deserve to get paid, though I'd like to see some more regulations around it. Unfortunately, when we're paying quarterbacks $8 million to play football for two seasons, there are going to be a lot of questions about how fair that is to other programs.
I'm curious to see if the current NCAA landscape will stay the same for much of the future, but this is where things stand right now, and that's exactly what we have to go with.
For Duke, that's unfortunately something that it had to deal with this past offseason in the college football portal. With the transfer portal about to close, star quarterback Darian Mensah decided to put his name out there, with everybody in the world knowing that he was going to Miami if they follow college football.
According to Mensah, not all of his reason for going to Miami was the money he was given. He can come out and say that, and I don't want to say that he's lying, but I think we all know that there's not a whole lot of truth behind that. In fact, he's also trying to make some other excuses about how he felt uncomfortable at Duke, saying that because his NIL figure was public, players looked at him differently.
"It's a huge credit to [my teammates] because stepping into [the Miami] locker room was pretty easy. Usually it's not. At Duke it wasn't easy to do that," Mensah told ESPN.
"At Duke there was kind of some friction when I first got there because my dollar amount was released. Everybody sees that, and it was just hard for me to be the new guy, and everybody said, 'Oh you're getting paid more than me and I've been here for X amount of years.' At Miami, the culture is different, and it just feels like family and actually feels like I'm at home."
There's always going to be jealousy, no matter where a player goes, but other players from Duke have come out and stated that none of this is true.
In fact, they were all happy to have Mensah on the roster because they all understood that it gave them a chance to win. I'm not sure why he would come out and say this, but it's a hot topic at the moment after some recent comments going around.
