The Duke Blue Devils and head coach Manny Diaz may have found their new starting quarterback for the 2026 season.

After an impressive 2025 college football season, the Duke Blue Devils and head coach Manny Diaz will look to build off their recent success heading into the offseason.

One of the most important storylines for Duke as of late has been former starting quarterback Darian Mensah’s late transfer to the Miami Hurricanes, despite originally signing a deal to return for the 2026 season. This left a massive hole at the position with little time to find his replacement within the transfer portal.

Luckily, Diaz and the rest of the coaching staff received more clarity as to who will be in the quarterback room next season earlier this week.

According to college football insider Pete Thamel on Thursday, former San Jose State and Duke incoming transfer quarterback Walker Eget was informed by the NCAA that he is eligible to play for the Blue Devils in 2026.

Coming out of high school, Eget was not a highly rated prospect, as he was a consensus three-star quarterback in the 2021 recruiting class. The California native received multiple Division I offers, but would ultimately choose to stay close to home and sign with the San Jose State Spartans.

Eget would receive his first starting opportunity with the program back in 2024, where he finished the season with 2,504 passing yards and 13 touchdowns. It was clear that Eget had the talent to be a productive quarterback at the college level, but he needed to refine his game in order to become more consistent.

Fortunately for the veteran playmaker, he would show some growth during the 2025 season, as he ended the year with 3,051 passing yards and 17 touchdowns, while also completing a career-high 59 percent of his pass attempts in 11 games. This led to him entering the transfer portal last month, and Mensah’s late departure opened the door to him joining the program.

Now, Eget is set to compete against redshirt freshman Dan Mahan for the starting position ahead of the 2026 season. However, Eget’s experience with the Spartans will give him a clear-cut advantage over Mahan, who sat behind Mensah in 2025.
