Manny Diaz had nothing but praise for quarterback Walker Eget after another impressive performance.
The Duke Blue Devils are 3-0 on the season following their latest win on Saturday over Stanford. As Duke is off to a hot start and are 1-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, things feel like they are starting to come together for Manny Diaz's team.
Duke's defense has been really good, and they have a star at the running back position with Nate Sheppard leading college football in rushing yards. Add in the recent play of quarterback Walker Eget, and Duke's offense is looking even better.
Eget struggled in the win over Tulane to open the year but bounced back in the win over Illinois and Stanford. That type of play is what Duke expected from Eget after he won the starting job and head coach Manny Diaz is noticing that Eget is getting 'better and better' as the games go on.
"I think he's getting better and better," Diaz said after the win over Stanford. "I think of Walker the same way I think of our receiver room. Our passing offense is going to improve. It's going to get better. I thought we made some big plays today, throwing for over 200 yards, but I think we'll watch the film and see that we also had some misses that could have been more explosive for us."
While Duke's offense is leaning on Sheppard, Eget is making some plays. The offense is starting to open up more and it could be dangerous for opponents moving forward.
Diaz noted a few plays that stood out to him as well.
"But the plays he made, the back shoulder to Jared and the deep ball to Solomon, those were big-time throws," Diaz said. "In a moment where we really needed that, Stanford's going to challenge you to make the one-on-ones down the field. I just thought making those plays is just going to do Walker’s confidence as a guy that's just three games into the system. I'm sorry, against three good defenses."
Duke has played a good non-conference schedule so far but as the year goes on, they will face some tougher competition. Time will tell if Eget can keep this up but at the very least, Duke has some hope.
