Duke Blue Devils head coach Jon Scheyer is facing major criticism after his team's loss to UConn.
Heading into Sunday evening's Elite Eight showdown between the Duke Blue Devils and UConn Huskies, everyone knew that the game would be must-watch basketball.
Both teams have elite talent on their rosters. They also both have elite head coaches.
Throughout most of the game, Duke appeared to have control. Jon Scheyer's team was playing well and carried a 44-29 lead into halftime. The game appeared to be all but over.
Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, the game isn't over until the final whistle sounds. With just 0.4 seconds remaining following a Duke turnover, UConn freshman guard Braylon Mullins hit a 35-foot three-point attempt to win the game by a final score of 73-72.
Just like that, the Blue Devils blew another NCAA Tournament lead. The loss had Duke fans remembering back to last season when the team blew a big lead against the Houston Cougars. Fans have not taken the loss very well.
On social media, Scheyer has been facing brutal backlash for the loss. Let's take a look at some of the posts being made about the Blue Devils' head coach.
Fans Are Going After Jon Scheyer on Social Media
"If Duke doesn’t fire Jon Scheyer by tomorrow, something is seriously wrong," one fan wrote.
Another chimed in, "No scandals, no allegations, just an absolute choke artist with generational talent. JON SCHEYER."
"Jon Scheyer quickly becoming one of the worst in game coaches," a third fan wrote.
A fourth comment read, "Jon Scheyer choked in back to back seasons with Cooper Flagg and Cam Boozer his Duke resume beyond fried LMAOOOOOO."
"There needs to be conversations had about Jon Scheyer its inexcusable to lose like that in back to back years with Great teams," a fifth fan commented.
At the end of the day, Scheyer has lost two games in choking fashion in the NCAA Tournament in just two years. No one can fault fans for being frustrated.
That being said, Scheyer is still one of the best head coaches in college basketball. Duke isn't going to fire him, despite the outcries for them to do so.
Sadly, the season has come to an end for the Blue Devils. It was a game they should have won, but they call it March Madness for a reason.
