Duke basketball head coach Jon Scheyer offered some insight into his recruiting methods.

The 2026-27 college basketball season is still months away but the anticipation is high for another Duke Blue Devils' season. But the Fall months don't just mean the return of basketball to the court.

It's also a very important time for recruiting.

Recruits have already set multiple visits for the Fall season as programs look to impress and build their recruiting classes. For Duke, they have one commitment in the 2027 class which is expected to be a smaller one. But in 2028, the Blue Devils could take on another huge class and continue their success on the recruiting trail.

Duke has the No. 1 overall class in the 2026 cycle that they are bringing in and since Jon Scheyer took over for Coach K, they have found a lot of success on the recruiting trail.

Now, Scheyer is giving some insight into how he handles recruiting. He doesn't promise starting spots to anyone as you have to earn them.

"One of the ways we build our foundation starts with the recruiting process," the three-time ACC champion head coach, whose past two Duke basketball teams combined for a 70-7 overall record, explained in the first 2026-27 Duke Blue Planet episode, which the program's creative team posted on social media this weekend. "I'm not promising an exact role, starting spot, whatever it may be."

The goal for Scheyer? Create a lot of competition on the roster which will help elevate multiple players.

"I believe it's a one-of-one competitive situation where guys are fighting and earning for what they want. And it's made for some special days."

The competition in practices is what can make for some special days. Players get the most out of each other with that competition and it can signal some more playing time for a player at times.

So far, Scheyer has found some success not only in recruiting but also on the court with his teams. He's been to the Elite Eight three of his four seasons at Duke and has reached one Final Four.

But it's the bad losses that have haunted him and the hope is that he can get over the hump finally.
