There are plenty of former Duke Blue Devils stars currently playing in the NBA. Jayson Tatum is arguably the best of them at this point in time.
Tatum is currently the face of the franchise for the Boston Celtics. Unfortunately, he's also recovering from a torn Achilles that he suffered in the NBA Playoffs last season against the New York Knicks.
While the injury was a major setback for the NBA superstar, Tatum has attacked his rehab and is looking to get back on the court as soon as possible. Despite the expectation being that he would miss the entire 2025-26 season, it sounds like the Celtics might see Tatum in action this year.
In a new appearance on "NBA Today," Tatum revealed a major injury update about himself.
"I would say right now, it's getting pretty much back to like ramping up basketball workouts," Tatum said. "Yesterday I had my first on court basketball workout for about 15-20 minutes and it just felt really natural."
Simply being back on the court playing basketball is a huge step in the right direction for Tatum. Many players are out of action much longer than he has been.
Once again, it's a testament to the work ethic and toughness that Tatum has shown throughout his entire basketball career. Duke fans are well aware of the kind of player and person he is and this step will come as no surprise.
Last season with Boston, Tatum put together another strong season. He played in 72 games, averaging 26.8 points per game to go along with 8.7 rebounds, six assists, and 1.1 steals. In addition to those averages, the 27-year-old superstar shot 45.2 percent from the floor and 34.3 percent from three-point range.
Hopefully, this is another step closer towards Tatum playing this season. Even if he isn't able to play the same kind of role right off the bat that he has had for the Celtics throughout his career, his presence alone would be a huge boost for the team.
As he continued to recover from the injury, the Blue Devils' fan base will continue rallying behind him. He may no longer make an impact for Duke on the floor, but he's still a part of the family.
Expect to continue hearing updates about Tatum as he keeps working towards his highly anticipated return. For now, it's all good news for both him and Boston.
