Duke secure their championship-winning coach through 2031, signaling long-term stability after a surprising ACC title run.

Duke Makes Announcement on HC Manny Diaz's Future

Manny Diaz inherited a pretty good Duke team when Mike Elko left to join Texas A&M.

Diaz has done a good job of maintaining the program, going 18–9 in his first two seasons with the Blue Devils. Duke went 9-5 in 2025.

Some fortune went Duke's way towards the end of last season when the team made the ACC championship with five losses. The Blue Devils won the ACC Championship Game against Virginia, earning some momentum before 2026.

Per an announcement by Duke on Thursday night, the program extended the contract of Diaz through the 2031 season.

Blue Devils athletic director Nina King believes Diaz has proven to be the right coach for the program.

"Manny Diaz is exactly the right leader at exactly the right time for Duke University," King said via a news release from Duke. "His clear vision for Duke football, deep understanding of our student-athletes and strong alignment with campus and athletics leadership have positioned us for sustained success in the years ahead.

"We are incredibly proud to have him leading the Blue Devils, and with his passion, integrity and expertise, Duke football will continue to pursue excellence on and off the field well into the future."

Fans on social media reacted to the news that Diaz signed a contract extension.

"That’s a strong commitment from Duke stability after a championship run is exactly how you keep a program competing at the top year after year," wrote a fan.

"Rewarded him quick after that title run, duke locking in stability," argued a fan.

"Duke football was combined 1-23 when I started watching, 20 years later they’re conference champs and just extended their HC," posted another.

Diaz is set to have his most challenging season ahead of him with the Blue Devils. Quarterback Darian Mensah led Duke to the ACC Championship Game win before transferring to Miami for the 2026 campaign.

Mensah is projected to be one of the top quarterbacks in the nation this season and the top quarterback in the ACC.

Diaz will turn to San Jose State transfer Walker Eget to start at quarterback for the upcoming season.
