Despite a tournament exit, Duke lands a surprising 2026-27 ranking fueled by returning talent and incoming recruits poised for a Final Four run.
The Duke Blue Devils cruised to a No. 1 overall seed after winning the regular-season ACC championship and then winning the ACC Tournament for the 2025-26 campaign.
Despite battling injuries and playing a tight rotation, Duke leaned on star Cameron Boozer. The Blue Devils inexperience showed in the NCAA Tournament, as the team blew a 19-point lead on UConn in the Elite Eight.
Cayden Boozer's untimely turnover in the final seconds of the Elite Eight crushed Duke's hopes of returning to the Final Four, where the team had a legitimate chance of winning the national championship with Cameron.
Cameron is headed to the NBA, which will end a two-year run of the Blue Devils having elite college basketball talent like Cooper Flagg and Cameron for NCAA Tournament runs.
With that being said, Duke will have a deeper and more experienced roster for the upcoming season.
Cayden, Isaiah Evans, Caleb Foster, Patrick Ngongba and Dame Sarr will return. Bryson Howard, Deron Rippey and Cameron Williams are a few key additions Duke will have next season.
James Fletcher III of On3 ranked the Blue Devils No. 3 for the 2026-27 season after the transfer portal closed. He thinks head coach Jon Scheyer's recruiting class will keep the team in the running for a Final Four next spring.
"Duke puts together another top-end recruiting class with multiple top prospects, all slotting in different areas of the court," Fletcher wrote.
"The Blue Devils have confirmed the return of Cayden Boozer and Patrick Ngongba while adding a pair of highly-rated transfers."
Duke is in a quite a different spot this spring than they have been the past two years. Scheyer doesn't appear to have a Cooper Flagg or Cameron Boozer to be the outright No. 1 preseason team.
Fletcher put Duke behind Florida (No. 1) and Michigan (No. 2).
With development in the offseason, the Blue Devils could have more synergy than they had in recent seasons. That could actually benefit Duke even better in the NCAA Tournament.
The Blue Devils reliance on Flagg and Cameron to carry their respective teams was a hindrance at times.
