The Duke Blue Devils had a blowout win over William & Mary to stay unbeaten on the season.
The Duke Blue Devils could have faced a letdown spot on Saturday afternoon as they hosted William & Mary. But any chance of that happening went out of the window early on.
Duke quarterbacks Walker Eget and Dan Mahan combined to throw for 5 touchdowns in the 62-7 blowout win over William & Mary. The Blue Devils left no doubt in the game, putting together another big performance to move to 4-0 on the year.
To open the scoring, Eget hit Jayden Moore for a 24-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Nate Sheppard then found the end zone for a 19-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 14-0.
William & Mary got on the board right after that, cutting the lead to 14-7 with a touchdown pass. But Duke then scored the next 48 points in the big win.
Eget and Mahan split time in this game, giving Duke two options at the position. Mahan had his first two career touchdown passes, both in the second quarter and both for 29 yards. Those were his two lone throws until the third quarter where he had another touchdown pass to finish with three on the day.
Mahan finished the game 6-of-7 for 126 yards and three touchdowns. Eget went 16-of-22 for 182 yards and two touchdowns. Terry Walker also got action, completing two of his four pass attempts for 44 yards.
Sheppard had a season-low 116 yards on nine carries, having a 12.9 yards-per-carry mark as it was another good game for the running back. As a team, Duke rushed for 286 yards and averaged 7 yards per carry.
Duke's defense dominated the game, allowing just 170 total yards on offense. They did so despite not having any takeaways in the game.
For the Blue Devils, they can now head into the bye week with a lot of confidence. They are 4-0 overall and 1-0 already in the Atlantic Coast Conference, giving them a good start to the year. Coming out of the bye, Duke will get into the meat of their conference schedule.
They will also be on the road in two of their next three games starting with Georgia Tech on October 10th and then Virginia on October 23rd. Duke will face off against North Carolina at home in the game between those two road games.
Duke should also see themselves ranked going into the bye week at 4-0.
