A key Duke Blue Devils football player revealed why he returned for his sophomore season.
The college football landscape has drastically changed over the years and with NIL and the transfer portal, roster turnover is at an all-time high. A perfect example is with the Duke Blue Devils.
After winning the Atlantic Coast Conference last season, Duke had high hopes going into this season. With the play of quarterback Darian Mensah, Duke's future was bright and then just like that it was all over.
Mensah opted to transfer to Miami at the very last second, landing a huge NIL deal in the process. The move made waves in the wrong way and it was clear that Duke is still upset about it. He wasn't the only one that went to Miami as a few others followed.
But one player who opted to return was running back Nate Sheppard.
The running back had 1,132 rushing yards on 200 attempts and finished with 11 touchdowns in his freshman season. He was a key part to Duke's success, and having him back is huge. It also shows his loyalty.
While at ACC Kickoff, Sheppard explained why he decided to return.
“The ultimate deciding factor was just the team we have and the family we have in that locker room,” Sheppard said. “I think we have one of the best locker rooms in the country, one of the best cultures in the country.”
Those words speak volumes to what Duke has been building under Manny Diaz. Sheppard likely had other NIL offers that he could have taken; that's just the reality of this sport. To return and try to take this team to the next step is huge.
While Duke will be looking for a new quarterback to run the offense, having a player like Sheppard in the backfield could be huge. He's been at Duke and knows the offense, plus he can emerge as a leader which is something that this team needs.
Time will tell if he or Mensah made the right decisions but that is in the past now. The focus is on the future and what to expect this coming season for the Blue Devils.
