Despite recent championship success, a dismal historical win percentage and high-profile roster departures have cemented the Duke Blue Devils at the bottom of the conference’s all-time rankings.
The Duke Blue Devils have been one of the better ACC football programs in the last four seasons.
Mike Elko won 16-9 in two seasons with the program before taking the Texas A&M gig before the 2024 season. Manny Diaz has continued to keep the program competitive, going 18-9 in his first two seasons, including winning the ACC championship last season.
But the Blue Devils’ history has been more about surviving losing seasons than making bowl appearances. Since 1996, Duke has had four seasons where they haven't won a contest. They won just one game in each of the 2005 and 2007 seasons.
From 2000 to 2007, Duke won a total of 10 games.
It's no surprise then that Eddie Timanus of USA Today ranked Duke as the worst football program in the ACC. However, he thinks the Blue Devils could go on an upward trajectory soon.
"Somebody has to be No. 17 on the list, and it might seem odd at first glance to see the defending conference champion in that spot," Timanus wrote.
"Indeed, the Blue Devils' apparent commitment to changing their football fortunes could move them up in future rankings, but their all-time .371 league win percentage keeps them here for now."
The Blue Devils have no claimed national championships. They have an overall losing record of 555-565-31 and a bowl record of 9-9.
Duke dominated the SoCon Conference at one point, winning 10 conference championships from 1933 to 1952. The Blue Devils did well early in their time with the ACC, winning six conference championships from 1953 to 1962, but did not win another until 1989.
Diaz has been a solid hire for Duke, but the team suffered a major setback in the offseason when quarterback Darian Mensah and wide receiver Cooper Barkate transferred to ACC rival Miami.
Expect the Blue Devils to take a step back in 2026, and the program might even miss a bowl game.
With that being said, Diaz is a strong developer, and with an aggressive push in the transfer portal before next season, Duke could contend for another ACC championship in 2027.
