Standing 7-foot-2 with elite tools, how can anyone say differently about what he is?
Duke youngster Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje finds himself in one of the more intriguing positions in all of college basketball this season. Unfortunately, the young man can't be selected in the 2027 NBA Draft because he's too young to declare for it. However, he has an opportunity to be the No. 1 pick in the 2028 NBA Draft, which means he has two seasons of college basketball to play, with both of them hopefully being at Duke.
The only scenario in which Boumtje Boumtje isn't on the roster next season is likely if he doesn't play as well as anybody is expecting him to, but it seems like there's no scenario in which that's going to happen. Listed at 7-foot-2 on Duke's roster, the young man has all the tools to be one of the best players in the country, not even just for a freshman.
There is a genuine argument to be made that he has the opportunity to be a Cooper Flagg and Cameron Boozer type of impact player, so I think it's also important not to put those types of expectations on him right away.
Regardless, he's coming in with a lot of hype, and it's led to some analysts suggesting that he's the most interesting player in the country this year. The latest to do so were two insiders from The Athletic, who wanted to pick somebody else but admitted that when you watched him in preseason, it was impossible to pick anybody differently.
“He’s 17 and the favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2028 NBA Draft because he’s too young to declare for the 2027 draft. He’s an American who spent the past several years playing in FC Barcelona Bàsquet’s system in Spain. If he succeeds, we could see more young players come to college early and, while less likely, it could lead some families to consider moving abroad for development…
“I wanted to come up with a more creative answer, but after watching Boumtje Boumtje this preseason, it’s hard to imagine him becoming anything but one of the best players in the sport. His rim protection, 3-point shooting and passing acumen stand out. The only thing limiting him is Duke’s depth, which means he doesn’t need to be a 20-point-per-game scorer,” Brendan Marks and CJ Moore of The Athletic wrote.
The fact that the young man can hit shots at the level he does at 7-foot-2 is absolutely ridiculous from beyond the arc.
He has a ridiculous skill set for a 17-year-old who is this big, showing me that he can genuinely be a generational type of talent one day. Of course, he's going to have to prove that he can be as good as he was in exhibition games during the regular season, but with all the talent around him as well, he's going to be in a position where he can really show out.
Duke has to feel very confident in what it has with a player of this caliber, and what's scary is that it's going to have him for more than a season if things go as planned.
