If NCAA Doesn't Fix Issues, Should Duke Football Take Advantage of It?

As NCAA transfer and NIL regulations get worse, why not just have it be a free for all?

If this college basketball and football season has shown anything throughout the portal cycle, it's that the NCAA has absolutely no idea what it's doing. The NCAA finds itself in a very strange position at the moment, especially with college basketball starting on Monday night.

With the five-in-five rule trying to be passed by players, many guys are in court attempting to become eligible just a few days before the start of the season.

It's almost impossible to get a feel for what's going to happen, though it seems like it could be a situation that becomes an issue once again this offseason.

It's gotten to the point now in the NCAA that nobody has any idea what's going to happen. Speaking to reporters about that, Duke‘s head football coach, Manny Diaz, had a lot to say about the matter. He said that the problem is that he can go to one person and they don't know the rule. The next person might have a rule, but a different conference isn't following it.

“You might as well go to a fortune cookie,” Diaz said, H/T On3. “I mean, it doesn’t matter who you go to. Like, I mean, it’s just because no one knows right now. There’s really no one that can definitively say, ‘Hey, listen.’ You know, you saw the Big Ten try to pass a rule yesterday. No one knows if that’s going to stand up in the court of law. And ultimately, that’s the issue, right?

“The issue is our rules are being litigated in courtrooms, and so we’re always bouncing from one ruling to the next ruling, and then somebody will make a ruling, and then we have to, that has to survive appeal, and so it’s just it’s just really, really difficult. And then that’s why people have capitalized on it. Just, you know, people who don’t want the rules to change that are on top right now because they’re just the big spenders. They’re the most quiet ones because they don’t want the system to change, and right now they feel like they’ve got it changed.”

If I were Duke and other schools around the country, I would do things until somebody tells me that I can't.

The unfortunate reality is that the NCAA isn't exactly cracking down on some of these teams who aren't following these rules anyway, so why not just keep trying to toe that line and hope that things don't get penalized?

That's obviously a risk that Duke would have to be willing to take, though I think we're going to be in a situation soon where this gets even worse than it might already be.
