Duke head coach Manny Diaz sent a strong message after his team took down Illinois this past weekend.

The 2026 version of the Duke Blue Devils has looked very different from 2025, which could be scary for the rest of the ACC.

While Duke did have some stumbles a year ago, they did ultimately win in the ACC. But coming into the new season, the Blue Devils weren't being given too much respect, with many people doubting what they could do.

So far, Duke has won its first two games, with both getting some revenge for losses last season. The Blue Devils seem like they are on a mission this time around, giving thought to another special year.

Last season, Duke lost to both Tulane and Illinois in frustrating fashion. This led to all sorts of speculation that the Blue Devils would have it happen again.

Especially entering the game against Illinois this past weekend, many picked against Duke. Illinois took down the Blue Devils 45-19 a year ago, but Duke wasn't having any of it this time around.

Head coach Manny Diaz looked back on those games from last season, revealing what they mean for the program.

"All they heard the entire off-season was about who left and almost the assertion that last year was as good as it could ever get," Diaz said. "We've already beaten two programs who last year's team couldn't beat. I think that means a lot to the guys in the locker room."

But through the first two weeks of the season, this team has shown that it can finish games, which was a big question coming into the year. Both the offense and defense came together against Illinois over the weekend, showing a well-rounded approach to the game.

If the Blue Devils can play with this type of focus the rest of the year, another ACC title isn't out of the question. Diaz has his guys ready to go each week, playing with a type of fight that you want to see from a team.

Running back Nate Sheppard has led the way on offense, putting together a special year so far. Sheppard was great last season for Duke as well, and he's been able to put the team on his back so far.

Duke will get its first crack at an ACC opponent next week when they host the Stanford Cardinal. The Blue Devils will be looking to make a statement in this game, as they try to move to 3-0 on the young season.
