Ever since taking over for longtime coach Mike Krzyzewski, Scheyer has been as advertised, holding an 89-22 record with three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and a Final Four.
Scheyer is a Duke lifer. He spent all four years of his college career playing in front of the Cameron Crazies, and managed to win the NCAA Championship as a senior in 2010 after dramatically beating Butler.
Not only that, he’s fourth in school history in 3-pointers made, fifth in 3-point percentage, third in free throw percentage, 10th in points scored, and seventh in steals.
So yeah, the name 'Scheyer' is pretty sacred in Durham, just behind 'Krzyzewski,' but if all continues to go well, perhaps he’ll find an inkling of his predecessor’s success.
He served as an assistant to Krzyzewski for four seasons, and also became the associate head coach four seasons later.
The extension comes on the heels of his most successful season at the helm, with a 35-4 record, winning both the ACC regular season championship and the ACC Conference championship.
On top of that, he led the Blue Devils to the NCAA Final Four, where they ultimately fell to Houston in the semifinals.
Scheyer has done a masterful job on the recruiting trail and picking up right where Coach K left off. He managed to grab two of the top five players in the freshman class in Cooper Flagg and Khaman Maluach, as well as two more in the top 20 in Isaiah Evans and Kon Kneuppel.
Three of those players in Flagg, Kneuppel, and Maluach were all drafted in the top-10 of the 2025 NBA Draft. Conversely, Evans is staying on for his sophomore season.
In three of his four seasons as coach, Scheyer has landed the top recruiting class three times, with his other being second-ranked.
So it’s no surprise why the Blue Devils are expecting a strong start to this upcoming season.
With Duke losing its whole starting five from last season, it is expected to rank inside the top-10 prior to its first game against Texas. With Evans returning, on top of premium recruits in Cameron and Cayden Boozer, as well as Nikolas Khamenia, there’s reason to believe that the Blue Devils will pick up where they left off.
Scheyer’s deal is expected to run through the 2030-31 season. The Blue Devils start their season against Texas on November 4, with an 8:45 p.m. ET tip off.
