Former Duke Star QB Finally Showing Signs of NFL Life cover image

Former Duke Blue Devils star Daniel Jones appears to have something brewing with the Indianapolis Colts.

Former Duke Blue Devils star Daniel Jones has been an afterthought among NFL quarterbacks for quite some time. During his time with the New York Giants, he showed flashes of stardom, but those flashes never turned into consistency.

After being released from the Giants last season, Jones signed with the Minnesota Vikings for the rest of the year. He didn't play during a game, but it gave him a breath of fresh air.

Entering the offseason, he was one of the more intriguing free agent quarterbacks available.

There were a few teams who made sense as a possible landing spot for him. However, the Indianapolis Colts were the team that swooped in and signed him to a one-year, $14 million contract. That move paid off in Week 1 action.

Against the Miami Dolphins in the Colts' season opener, the former Duke star quarterback had a breakout performance. He looked like a player who could stick around in Indianapolis for years to come.

Jones completed 22 of his 29 passes throughout the course of the game, racking up 272 yards through the air, a touchdown, and no interceptions. On the ground, he picked up 26 yards and two touchdowns.

It was the kind of game that can change a career. Truthfully, Jones seems to be in a great place in Indianapolis. Perhaps it's the fit that he has needed all along.

Following the 33-8 win over the Dolphins, Jones spoke out about his debut. He enjoyed the win, but he knows his work is not close to being completed. Jones hasn't really proven anything yet.

“It felt good to get a win, for sure,” Jones said. "I think we played well as a team. It’s a good start. I think we feel good about the start. But I think everyone on our team is mature enough to know we have to continue to grow and improve, and I think that’s the mindset of our team now.”

From the very beginning after signing with the Colts, head coach Shane Steichen believed in Jones. Many felt that Jones would get the starting job over Anthony Richardson as training camp and preseason action unfolded. That was indeed the case.

Granted, it's just one game. Jones still has a lot to prove in Indianapolis. But, it's a great start and one that Jones badly needed.

All Blue Devils fans are happy to see Jones find success. His NFL career has not gone according to plan, but perhaps that will change starting this season with the Colts.
