TCU 84, Florida 80: Gators' Fundamental Flaws Are a Growing Concern cover image

College basketball's reigning national champions are a bit of a mess right now. Corrections are urgent given their upcoming schedule.

If the Florida Gators can look this sloppy against unranked TCU, what will happen against top 5 powerhouses Duke and UConn?

No. 10 Florida surrendered a 10-point second-half lead and lost 84-80 in the first game of their holiday basketball tournament in San Diego.

The Gators' fundamental problems Thursday were familiar:

  • Their starting guards can't shoot.

Boogie Fland and Xaivian Lee made only one three-pointer and both players fouled out. The early-season nightmare continues for Lee, the transfer from Princeton who has missed 35 of 42 three-point shots.

  • Through six games, the Gators have more turnovers than assists.

Fland, Thomas Haugh and Rueben Chinyelu were responsible for 13 of the 19 giveaways against TCU.

"I thought we did a horrendous job taking care of the basketball," head coach Todd Golden said after the game. "The last 15 minutes of the game, we did a terrible job that way; and I thought our defense was really poor in the second half giving up 57 percent from the field."

The Horned Frogs outscored the Gators 44-34 in the paint — a disturbing result since Florida's big men are considered among the best in the nation.

Florida (4-2) gets an immediate chance to make corrections: They play Providence at 3 p.m. ET Friday. The game will be televised on Fox.
