Florida and Georgia Rise in AP Poll Ahead of Week 9 Showdown
Oct 25, 2026 11:01 PM

Idle weeks propelled both rivals up the rankings, setting the stage for a high-stakes Halloween clash.

Despite neither team playing in Week 8, both the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs rose in the AP Top 25.

After a wild week across the country, Georgia increased from No. 5 to No. 3 while Florida sits at No. 17.

Going into the bye week, Florida was ranked No. 20, so they rose one spot more than their opponent on Halloween.

Obviously, none of that means much in the grand scheme of things. Florida is fresh off a stunning 27-24 win at Texas, a team that went back up eight spots after a Week 8 victory.

The Longhorns are a confusing team, to say the least, but so is Florida. This is a Gators squad that looked like they were on top of the world, but then they hit rock bottom against Missouri and South Carolina.

Fresh off a three-point win in Austin, Florida is as well-rested as it gets, but the Bulldogs are as well.

Georgia is 6-1 (4-1) this year, and if there was ever a time for the Gators to pull off another massive upset, it's now.

Remember, Georgia lost a rare home game to Auburn, 27-24, going into the bye week.

Despite that, they're still the No. 3 team in the nation, and that goes to show just how good these Bulldogs truly are and how much this team is respected.

If Florida wants to earn that same respect, they have no choice but to take care of business in Week 9.

College football playoffs on the line

A second loss for Georgia won't necessarily knock them out of the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket, but it would sure make their lives more difficult.

There's absolutely no room for error for the Gators, and they couldn't have asked for a tougher stretch of games having this one immediately after they played Texas.

The SEC is a gauntlet, and even if the Gators were to win this game, they could still drop a third game in November as they have to play at No. 9 Kentucky.

A third loss would guarantee the playoffs are out the window, but Florida's hopes are still alive, even with a pair of abysmal losses to start the month of October.

That said, the last thing Florida needs to be doing is thinking about the playoffs right now. Jon Sumrall's squad needs to take things one game at a time, and that starts on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium against Georgia.
