As Florida offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner backs his hand-picked transfer Aaron Philo, a high-stakes training camp battle looms to determine who will lead the Gators' SEC offensive surge.
Florida head coach Jon Sumrall didn't want to keep going on and on about the quarterback battle during spring practice.
That's understandable, as the first-year head coach needs his players all over the roster to become much more competitive and physical this offseason. Even after spring practice was over, Sumrall noted that he wished he could bring in transfer players before training camp to infuse competition in the roster.
Still, the Gators will need the winner of the quarterback battle, Aaron Philo or Tramell Jones Jr., to play at a high level if the team hopes to achieve its goal of making a bowl game and contending in the SEC.
Per Max Olson of ESPN, new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner has confidence that Philo, who played under him at Georgia Tech, can run the offense at Florida.
"Philo was the hand-picked portal addition that offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner brought with him from Georgia Tech," Olson wrote. "Sumrall has said Faulker has "extreme confidence" in Philo, and he has flashed exciting potential in wins over NC State in 2024 and Gardner-Webb in 2025.
"Two years learning under Faulker gave him a clear head start in operating this offense, but Sumrall didn't guarantee him the starting job during his recruitment."
Jones had the better practice during the Orange & Blue game, and can win the battle in training camp. Olson noted that Jones will need to play with "efficiency" to win the starting job in camp.
"Jones earned the backup job behind DJ Lagway as a true freshman last year and played 69 snaps over two games while redshirting," Olson wrote. "If he can play with efficiency in this offense, he'll have a chance.
"The future is bright for both young passers and the supporting cast of skill talent is impressive with running back Jadan Baugh and wide receivers Vernell Brown III, Eric Singleton Jr. and Dallas Wilson."
Baugh will be the feature of the offense, and could play his way into becoming a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
However, UF needs to push the ball downfield if they want to compete in the SEC.
Philo struggled with turnovers in the final practice. He'll need to clean up his game if he wants to start in Week 1.
