ESPN's Rece Davis envisions a prime-time Week 0 clash for Florida in Gainesville, maximizing ratings and igniting the college football season.

Florida: ESPN's Rece Davis Has Big Idea For Night Game in Gainesville

Florida will open their season in Week 1 at home against FAU.

That game will have significant importance for the Gators, as it will be the first contest under new head coach Jon Sumrall.

Florida will then host Campbell, giving the program two tune-up games before beginning its SEC schedule on the road against Auburn on Sept. 19.

While the Gators are playing in Week 1, plenty of college football will happen before their game on Sept. 5.

In recent years, Week 0 has gained traction, with many teams scheduling matchups in August.

During an episode of the "College GameDay" podcast, host Rece Davis suggested Week 0 needs to be packed with marquee matchups. He argued Florida should play a big night game in Week 0 against an elite opponent.

“I am. We’re doing it (already), I’d like to see more games,” Davis said, via On3. “Always kind of disappointing there aren’t more great games... "I somewhat mentioned it, if you’re going to play games in Gainesville or Baton Rouge Week 0 they need to be night games.

"So then you come into an inventory thing, question for television. Because somebody will have to kick off at noon. And, heck, it can be hot in Ann Arbor, too.”

It's unclear when The Swamp will have a night game this season. All of Florida's times are set to be declared for the upcoming season.

ESPN's Pete Thamel noted ratings are optimal in Week 0 for college programs.

“You avoid the NFL Week 0. Week 0 ratings are awesome,” Thamel said. “Remember Georgia Tech ended up like (highly watched).  That Georgia Tech-Florida State game that we were at in Dublin did a monster rating because it was a great game, two big brands, big population areas.

"Came down to the last second. Now that you’re incentivized monetarily in the ACC by your TV ratings, like those things matter.”

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal recently took a shot at Florida head coaches like Jon Sumrall, for not being alumni of the teams they coach.

A Week 0 matchup between the Gators and Hurricanes could be a contest as in-state recruits decide which program they want to attend.
