The Florida Gators have fallen into an unwanted category after falling to Missouri.
Coming into Week 5 of the college football season, the Florida Gators were riding high, with the team sitting at 4-0 on the year.
But that all was halted this weekend when they fell to the Missouri Tigers 45-17. Missouri blew out the Gators on their home field, sending Florida to its first loss of the season.
Entering this game, Florida was coming off an impressive win over the Ole Miss Rebels, showing the type of team that new head coach Jon Sumrall had put together. But in a classic college football sense, one week changed everything for this group.
Florida couldn't do much of anything against the Tigers, seeing star running back Jadan Baugh even be contained. While it was just one game, the Gators somewhat needed this to boost their resume for a potential College Football Playoff berth.
Now, the Gators are likely to fall down the ranking, and while a playoff berth can still be had given the schedule remaining, this was a tough loss. After the game, Florida entered unwanted territory, at least for this week.
College football analyst Scott Dochterman of The Athletic put together a projection for the playoff, and the Gators weren't in the top-12 teams any longer. In fact, Florida was named to the 'First Five Out' list, which isn't where this group wants to be.
Sumrall took over this program over the offseason hoping to bring them back to national relevance, and he has done that so far. But this loss against Missouri is a reminder for the Gators that every single week matters in this sport, and one poor performance can change everything for the team.
Florida fell victim to a trap game following a big win over a top-ranked team, but this will be an opportunity to learn going forward. The Gators can take from this loss to the Tigers, hoping to gain some ground in how they are as a group.
Sometimes losses like this can be good for a team in the weirdest ways, showing a unit that they aren't unbeatable. So, the biggest challenge for the Gators will be to show that they can respond to being beaten in a strong manner.
Florida still has everything out in front of them for the year, with games against some tough teams remaining on the schedule. If this team can bounce back quickly, starting next week against the South Carolina Gamecocks, the playoff can still be in their sights.
