Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall is very different from Billy Napier.
The Billy Napier era did not exactly go very well for the Florida Gators.
Florida hired Napier ahead of 2022 and watched as the team went just 22-23 under his direction, resulting in his firing after a 3-4 start last season.
Napier had previously experienced considerable success as Louisiana's head coach, going 40-12 with a couple of bowl victories over four seasons, but it obviously did not translate into the SEC. At least not as a head coach.
The Gators hired Sumrall as their new head coach back in November, and things already feel quite different in Gainesville as a result.
Sumrall was previously coaching at Tulane, which, coincidentally, is located in New Orleans, about a two-hour drive from Napier's prior coaching tenure in Lafayette.
So with Sumrall and Napier both having coached mid-tier schools in Louisiana before arriving at Florida, comparisons were prompted.
But Sumrall was sure to reveal that he and Napier are two different people.

Like zero percent," Sumrall said during a sitdown interview with Josh Pate. "Not because I'm the same as what was here. And I have a ton of respect for Billy. Not knocking who Billy is. I think he's been really successful. But we're not the same guy.”
Sumrall was sure not to disrespect Napier, but he was also sure to let everyone know that just because Napier failed in The Swamp does not mean Sumrall will be subject to the same fate.
The 43-year-old has four years of head-coaching experience, having split his time between Troy and Tulane. During that span, Sumrall went 43-12, most recently leading Tulane to an 11-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance.
Now, though, Sumrall will have to try and continue his success in a Power-4 conference, which is obviously a totally different ballgame.
Can Sumrall succeeded where Napier — who is now the head coach of James Madison — failed? It remains to be seen.
Florida will open up its 2026 campaign by hosting Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5.
