With the college football offseason in full swing, the Florida Gators and head coach Jon Sumrall will now slowly begin to build the foundations of the program.
One of the key areas that the new coaching staff must focus on this offseason is the 2027 recruiting class, as this will be their first recruiting cycle with Florida. Luckily for fans, Sumrall has already managed to land his first commit in the upcoming class. In addition to the hot start, the Gators could be in the midst of another highly-touted defender in the 2027 class.
According to Rivals’ Chad Simmons, Sumrall and the Gators are in the mix for former Tennessee cornerback commit Kamauri Whitfield in the 2027 recruiting class.
Whitfield, an in-state prospect, is starting to make a name for himself. He is currently a top-50 player in the state of Florida, as well as the No. 44-ranked cornerback in the class, per 247Sports’ Composite. However, with all the turnover that the program sustained in the coaching department, Whitfield would commit to Tennessee in October.
This would quickly change after he attended Florida’s Junior Day last month, as Whitfield would leave Gainesville with an offer from the Gators. Unfortunately for the newly-hired head coach, the struggling program would not be the only school to offer Whitfield, as the Oregon Ducks and multiple Power Four programs followed suit.
With the offers rolling in, Whitfield recently decided to decommit from the Volunteers earlier this week. Now, the Gators are one of five teams in the mix for the Orlando, FL native, including Oregon, Nebraska, Virginia Tech, and Auburn.
If Florida can land a commitment from Whitfield, he would be the second player in Sumrall’s 2027 class. Whitfield would join fellow three-star cornerback and Florida native Amare Nugent as the lone recruits in the class, forming a terrific cornerback duo for the future.
