Jon Sumrall and the Florida Gators have landed a pretty significant ranking.
When the Florida Gators hired Jon Sumrall to be their new head coach back in late November, the immediate reaction was generally favorable.
After all, Sumrall has become one of the hottest names on the coaching circuit in recent years, and his personality seemed to be exactly what Florida needed after such a dull run under Billy Napier.
But does Sumrall actually have what it takes to bring the Gators back to prominence?
Bill Connelly of ESPN's seems to think so, ranking Florida fifth among the teams most likely to improve under a first-year coach heading into 2026.
"Sumrall has been one of the best mid-major coaches in the country of late, and he has as good a chance at anybody of turning this barge around," Connelly wrote.
Sumrall has four years of head-coaching experience, having split his time between Troy and Tulane before arriving in Gainesville.
Throughout that span, the 43-year-old went 43-12, most recently leading Tulane to an 11-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance.

Thus far, Sumrall seems to be pretty comfortable, as he put together an impressive transfer portal haul that was ranked ninth among On 3's transfer portal rankings. He has also been hitting the recruiting trail pretty hard.
But whether or not all of that can manifest on the field remains to be seen.
Florida went just 4-8 last season and has posted four losing campaigns over its last five years, one of the worst stretches in program history.
Sumrall is certainly facing an uphill battle when it comes to getting things back on track in The Swamp, especially considering the degree of difficulty in the conference.
One thing is for sure, though: the atmosphere at Florida already appears to be different, and multiple players have even noted the energy shift.
Sumrall and the Gators will open up their 2026 campaign at home against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5. They'll face their first SEC opponent on Sept. 19 when they head to Auburn.
