The Florida Gators could be in good hands with Jon Sumrall.

The Florida Gators are starving for success, and back in late November, they took a huge step in what they felt was a positive direction by hiring Jon Sumrall as their new head coach.

Sumrall definitely has a good track record from his days at Troy and Tulane, where he posted a combined record of 43-12 and most recently led Tulane to an 11-3 mark and a College Football Playoff appearance.

However, the SEC is an entirely different ballgame, and while Sumrall certainly seems up for the challenge, we have to see how things shake out for him on the field.

Former college football player and current broadcaster Brooks Austin seems to believe that Sumrall will absolutely start to right the ship in Gainesville next season, and he dropped a major prediction for Florida during a recent appearance on the Paul Finebaum Show.

"You give these guys (Sumrall and offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner) Florida talent, what's going to happen?" Austin said. "I marked them off nine wins preseason. That's the way I think about it. Before we even get to the head coach, Sumrall. I think he is a lunatic with emotional intelligence. And that's hard to find."

Austin means "lunatic" in the most positive sense.

Sumrall is a former linebacker, so it's not surprising that he is trying to push his team to adopt a physical, no-holds-barred mentality.

Of course, it's one thing to have that attitude, but you also need the talent to actually beat opposing ballclubs. Especially in a Power-4 conference.

The good news is that Sumrall put together one of the top transfer portal hauls in the country, so much so that On 3 ranked the Gators ninth in their transfer portal rankings.

Sumrall also convinced key players like running back Jadan Baugh, wide receiver Vernell Brown and edge rusher Jayden Woods to return to Florida. Plus, he has been very active on the recruiting trail and is building quite a class for 2027.

Will the 43-year-old be able to lead the Gators to nine wins in his first season? That's a tall task, especially considering Florida went just 4-8 last year and has posted four losing campaigns in its last five seasons.

But if Sumrall does get off to a hot start, he will quickly become the most beloved man in The Swamp.
