With the 2025 college football season officially in the books, the Florida Gators and newly-hired head coach Jon Sumrall have continued to make massive moves within the transfer portal this offseason.
Two of the most notable acquisitions via the transfer portal this offseason were Georgia Tech quarterback Aaron Philo and Auburn wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr., who are both projected to be impact players for the Gators in 2026.
While Sumrall’s efforts in rebuilding the offense have been strong thus far, the former Tulane head coach recently addressed the defensive side of the ball.
According to CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer, former East Carolina Pirates’ star defensive back Jordy Lowery has committed to the Gators shortly after entering the transfer portal.
Lowery has had an incredible college football journey prior to his signing with the program. As a three-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting cycle, the Florida native managed to rack up several FBS offers ranging from the Kansas Jayhawks to the Colorado State Rams. However, Lowery would ultimately decide to continue his football career at the FCS level with the Western Carolina Catamounts.
After playing in just one game as a freshman during the 2023 season, Lowery would eventually receive an increased workload in 2024, as he would play in 11 games for the Catamounts. However, it would not be until 2024 that he would show his true potential as a defensive back at the college level.
With multiple years of experience under his belt, Lowery quickly became one of the best cornerbacks in the FCS during the 2024 season, recording 48 tackles, 14 pass deflections, six interceptions, and 2.5 tackles for losses.
His outstanding season paved the way to make the jump to the FBS, as he would enter the transfer portal and sign with East Carolina.
Luckily for the rising star, his success from his days at Western Carolina would follow him with the Pirates in 2025.
As a redshirt junior, Lowery ended last season with 27 tackles, four pass breakups, and two tackles for losses. And while he may have been a late addition to the transfer portal this offseason, this did not stop Sumrall from landing the up-and-coming defensive back.
