Perhaps the Florida Gators' quarterback battle is not as it seemed?
The Florida Gators held their Orange and Blue spring game over the weekend, and both Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. had a chance to flash their stuff in the battle for the starting quarterback job.
While Philo entered the game as the clear leader in the quarterback race, things may have changed after the Saturday matchup ... or at least things may have tightened.
Philo went 21-for-28 with 193 yards, a couple of touchdowns and a pair of interceptions in the affair, and afterward head coach Jon Sumrall made it clear that Philo simply cannot be turning the ball over.
Meanwhile, Jones went a far more efficient 13-for-17 with 210 yards and two touchdown tosses.
Suddenly, the quarterback competition has some new life, and a controversy may be emerging under center.
Of course, that could be more for the fans than Sumrall himself.
Nothing appears to have changed in terms of Sumrall's belief in Philo. He still seems to be operating as if the Georgia Tech transfer will be the starting signal-caller when the Gators open up against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5.

Jones is preparing to enter his redshirt freshman season. He made two appearances last year, going 21-for-35 with 191 yards and two touchdowns.
The former three-star recruit is a bit undersized at six feet tall, but the talent is undeniable. He is a true dual threat and also possesses impressive arm strength, which was on full display in the Gators' spring game.
Philo, on other hand, seems like more of a game manager, and it's not like he showed a ton during the brief action he saw at Georgia Tech.
The primary reason why he may have the inside track to the job is because he is a bit more experienced than Jones and because former Yellow Jackets offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner is now calling plays for Florida.
Philo may very well head into the 2026 campaign as the starter, but that does not necessarily mean he will finish the year taking snaps.
Jones is a very real threat to steal the job from Philo, and surely, Sumrall knows that. He's just playing it coy for now.
