The Florida Gators quarterback battle has received a rather surprising update.

The Florida Gators lost DJ Lagway to the transfer portal over the winter, but instead of landing one of the bigger names available, they poached former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets quarterback Aaron Philo.

Considering that new Florida coach Jon Sumrall also stole ex-Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, the fit made sense for Philo.

But will Philo actually move the needle in Gainesville?

While there has been some pretty significant optimism surrounding Philo ever since his arrival, with many dubbing him a potential sleeper heading into 2026, it doesn't appear he has the Gators' starting quarterback job locked down. Not even close.

In fact, Pete Nakos of On 3 has reported that Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. are "neck and neck" in spring practice, and with Florida holding 11-on-11 drills this coming weekend, one of the two signal-callers could ultimately make a big move soon.

Sumrall remained diplomatic when asked about the race.

"Both guys are doing a great job. They really are," Sumrall said. "Both guys are doing some things that excite you and feel like we could play winning football with either."

Jones is entering his second season at Florida. He made two appearances in 2025, completing 21 of his 35 passes for 191 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

Philo has long been viewed as the favorite, but it's not like he has a whole lot of experience, either.

In two years with the Yellow Jackets, the former three-star recruit went 59-for-102 with 938 yards, a pair of touchdowns and three interceptions.

Perhaps Sumrall is merely trying to light a fire under Philo, or maybe the competition really is that close.

And for Sumrall, it will never really end. At least not anytime soon.

"You can start game one and it doesn't mean you're starting game two or three or four," Sumrall said. "You've got to play even if you get the nod for game one."

Florida definitely has a compelling cast of weapons, featuring returning stars like running back Jadan Baugh and wide receiver Vernell Brown as well as transfer receiver Eric Singleton Jr.

But the Gators also need a quarterback who can get them the football. Maybe we'll find out more about who is really ahead on the race over the next week.
