The Florida Gators have definitely had a busy offseason, hiring Jon Sumrall to be their new head coach and then getting very active in the transfer portal.
One of Sumrall's most important tasks out of the gate was figuring out Florida's quarterback situation. DJ Lagway decided to transfer, which probably wasn't the worst thing in the world given how much of a disappointment Lagway was in Gainesville.
However, in order for the Gators to have any sort of real success in 2026, Sumrall needed to get things right under center. But instead of landing one of the top names in the transfer portal, Sumrall went out and bagged former Georgia Tech quarterback Aaron Philo.
Given that Sumrall also brought in ex-Yellow Jackets offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner to call plays, the Philo addition made sense, but the former three-star recruit is also entirely unproven. That's why some feel that Tramell Jones Jr. could challenge Philo for the starting quarterback job this spring.
But Michael Long of Gators Wire does not think it will be much of a competition, predicting Philo to win the job and finish top-five in the SEC in both completions and passing efficiency next season.

"The 6-foot-2-inch, 220-pound signal caller will start the season hot. Philo's connection with Faulkner aids in the Gators seeing elite play from the quarterback position, something the Orange and Blue have been starving for."
Philo arrived at Georgia Tech 2024 and spent two seasons with the Yellow Jackets, totaling 938 yards, a couple of touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 57.8 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 95 yards and a score.
"Understanding timing, terminology and tempo will give Philo confidence and comfort straight away as Faulkner's scheme relies on rhythm," Long added. "Playing fast and assured will result in an aggression not seen in recent years."
Clearly, Sumrall sees something he really likes in Philo, and based on how he previously identified Darian Mensah at Tulane, maybe should trust his judgment.
Florida went just 4-8 last season and has registered four losing campaigns over the last five years, but Sumrall could be the man to turn things around in the Swamp.
