The Florida Gators have received some significant news from a top defensive recruit.

Jon Sumrall has certainly done an incredible job since taking over as Florida Gators head coach back in late November.

Sumrall put together one of the best transfer portal hauls in the country this winter, and he also convinced several key Florida players to stay.

Not only that, but Sumrall has also gotten off to a great start on the recruiting trail, and he is being very aggressive in that department.

The Gators received some more positive news on that front earlier this week, as four-star 2027 safety Zayden Gamble revealed that Florida is among his top 10 schools, via Hayes Fawcett of On 3.

Gamble — who hails from Fort Lauderdale — is the 23rd-ranked safety and the 216th-ranked player overall in his class. He is also the 23rd-ranked player in the state of Florida.

The fact that Gamble is a Florida native could very well give the Gators a major edge in the chase to land him, so Sumrall and Co. could be sitting pretty here.

Georgia, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Oregon were among the remaining nine schools that made Gamble's list. Gamble has received offers from 32 schools.

Florida initially offered the 5-foot-11, 165-pound defensive back last May, long before Sumrall was on board in Gainesville.

Regardless, Sumrall's presence should only help the Gators in their quest to land Gamble and any other elite prospects.

Florida went just 4-8 this past season and has posted four losing campaigns over the last five years, representing one of the worst stretches in program history.

The Gators fired Billy Napier as head coach midway through the 2025 season and ultimately replaced him with Sumrall, who coached Tulane to an 11-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance this past year.

Sumrall has four years of head-coaching experience, splitting those years between Troy and Tulane. He has gone 43-12 overall and has established himself as one of the top up and coming names across the country.

We'll see if Sumrall can get this prideful Florida squad back on track heading into 2026 and beyond, and we'll also see if the Gators can bag Gamble.
