Jon Sumrall aims to rebuild Florida through defensive grit and impact transfers, yet a middle-of-the-pack power ranking suggests a grueling climb back to SEC elite status.
The Florida Gators are a ways away from competing for the College Football Playoff national championship.
That's not just the consensus of the media; new head coach Jon Sumrall has said repeatedly that he needs to find elite recruits in order for the Gators to win the championship.
Florida has lofty goals for the upcoming season. Sumrall wants to make a bowl game, which would show improvement after a 4-8 season in 2025. He wants to instill a culture of winning and confidence.
Still, UF might get bullied around by some SEC teams during its nine-game conference schedule.
Brad Crawford of CBS Sports ranked the Gators at No. 9 in the SEC's power rankings for the upcoming season.
"The Gators want year-to-year stability under Jon Sumrall, and he believes that process begins immediately," Crawford wrote. "Florida should be defense-driven with most of its starters returning alongside impact transfers Cam Dooley and DJ Coleman in the secondary.
"The Gators' wide receiver room gives whoever wins the quarterback job -- either Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo or Tramell Jones -- plenty of options. Vernell Brown and Dallas Wilson enter their second seasons in Gainesville, while Eric Singleton reunites with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner after previously playing for him at Georgia Tech."
Crawford does believe Sumrall has a unique opportunity to win this season, at least compared to new coaches at Arkansas and Auburn.
"Outside of Kiffin at LSU, Sumrall inherits the SEC's best win-now opportunity among first-year coaches," Crawford wrote. "More than two dozen transfers were necessary additions this cycle, but unlike many new staffs, Florida didn't rely heavily on talent from Sumrall's previous stop.
"Expect the Gators to be a rugged, physical team at the line of scrimmage, and for running back Jadan Baugh to surpass 1,000 rushing yards if he can stay healthy."
A No. 9 ranking wouldn't be the most exciting finish in the SEC for the Gators, but it would show that Sumrall has things trending in the right direction.
Florida needs Sumrall to earn a signature win this season, and that could help recruits come in for an even better 2027.
