Florida Gators Transfer Doesn't Hold Back on Jon Sumrall cover image

This Florida Gators transfer addition had a lot to say about head coach Jon Sumrall.

When Jon Sumrall took over as Florida Gators head coach back in late November, the program was in dire straits. I guess you could say it still is until proven otherwise.

Florida went just 4-8 last season and has posted four losing campaigns over the last five years, marking one of the worst stretches in school history.

There was a time when the Gators were one of the best football teams in the country, but that seems like eons ago.

Now, it's on Sumrall to recapture those glory days in Gainesville, and he has certainly gotten off to a fast start.

Sumrall has put together an impressive transfer portal haul at Florida, so much so that On 3 placed the Gators 12th in their transfer portal rankings.

One of Sumrall's top additions was former Kentucky Wildcats safety Cam Dooley, a former four-star recruit who logged 30 tackles and an interception last season.

While former Kentucky defensive coordinator Brad White's new presence with the Gators was one of the primary reasons Dooley decided to take his talents to the Swamp, he revealed that it was Sumrall who really won him over.

"The first time I met him, when I entered the portal, he had communicated with me and told me he wanted to talk. He was just super energetic, always energetic, seemed like a good person to be around," Dooley said, via Graham Hall of 247 Sports. "And when I took my official visit down here and got around him, he was just always smiling, always energetic, making my family feel comfortable being around him. He's just a great guy overall."

Dooley added that he also received interest from schools such as Iowa State, LSU, Mississippi State and Vanderbilt, but it was Florida that ultimately stood out to him.

The 6-foot-2, 208-pound defensive back has not really hit his ceiling yet, but he has two years of eligibility remaining to do so.

Perhaps heading to play for Sumrall in Gainesville will prove to be the best and most helpful decision Dooley has ever made.

Sumrall has four years of head-coaching experience, splitting his time between Troy and Tulane. He went 43-12 during that time, most recently leading Tulane to an 11-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance.
