Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall has some pretty lofty expectations going forward.

When Jon Sumrall accepted the Florida Gators head-coaching position back in late November, he surely knew he had his work cut out for him.

After all, Florida went just 4-8 last season and has registered just one winning campaign over the last five years. Once a proud program, the Gators have faded into near irrelevancy in the loaded SEC.

But Sumrall is expecting to turn things around in the Swamp.

During a recent interview with J.D. PicKell of On 3, Sumrall said that while he fully understands Florida is not ready to compete for a national championship just yet, he expects to get to that level rather promptly.

"I don't know that we're anywhere near where we want to be roster-wise from a completion standpoint to build long-term year-in, year-out championship programs. But I think we've got enough here to go compete," Sumrall said. "And we've got to develop who's here to be the best they can be as we build as fast as we can build.

"Because I'm not real patient. I do have a long-term plan for what I want this thing to look like, also I want to win right now."

Sumrall put together a tremendous transfer portal haul over the winter. In fact, On 3 ranked Florida 12th in that department.

Not only that, but the Gators seem to be ubiquitous on the recruiting trail and have been in on many top prospects in the class of 2027.

Sumrall split the first four years of his head-coaching career at Troy and Tulane, going 43-12 throughout that span. Most recently, he guided Tulane to an 11-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance.

Of course, finding success in a Power-4 conference is an entirely different arena, so Sumrall is facing quite a challenge heading into his debut campaign.

One thing is for sure, though: the atmosphere in Gainesville already feels improved since Sumrall took over, so expectations are naturally higher. Whether or not Sumrall can actually live up to them, though, remains to be seen.

Florida will open up at home against Florida Atlantic on Sept. 5.
