Jon Sumrall is taking over a Florida Gators program that has been suffering for the last half-decade, and he is hoping reverse the course.
Florida went just 4-8 last season and has posted four losing campaigns over the last five years, marking one of the worst stretches in school history.
Sumrall has already gotten off to a fast start, putting together an impressive transfer portal haul and changing the overall atmosphere in Gainesville.
He is also proving to be quite the comedian.
During a recent interview with Gators Breakdown, Sumrall offered a hilarious comments while discussing Florida's GPA versus its athletics.
"There’s very direct areas where things have been going right here," Sumrall said. "I think our academics have been really well done here. I even kid around with the team, we had a 3.6 GPA I think in the fall. I said I’d be okay with a touch lower GPA and more wins, but, you know, school matters. Let’s like, let’s win some games too."
The fact that Sumrall was willing to actually say this speaks volumes about his dedication to turning around the program.

Sumrall has four years of head-coaching experience, splitting that time between Troy and Tulane.
The 43-year-old went 43-12 over the course of that duration, most recently leading Tulane to an 11-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance. He was hired by Florida in late November following the team's decision to fire Billy Napier earlier in the 2025 campaign.
Of course, coaching an SEC school is an entirely different ballgame from Troy or Tulane. The competitive is much fiercer, and the margin for error is much slimmer.
That being said, there seems to be an unwavering confidence in Sumrall, and most are under the impression that if anyone can turn around the Gators at this point, it's him.
Obviously, that's easier said than done, and it may take some time for Sumrall to get Florida to where he wants it to be. But he is certainly off to a great start.
