Despite a dominant 2-0 start, Coach Sumrall warns of a potential SEC embarrassment as undisciplined penalties and inconsistent execution threaten to derail the Gators' looming clash at Auburn.
The Florida Gators will face their first test of the season when they go on the road against Auburn on Saturday.
The Gators are 2-0 after cruising to a 66-21 win over Florida Atlantic in their opener and earning a 52-3 win over Campbell on Saturday.
Auburn will enter the contest a little more battle-tested, surviving a 17-16 scare against Big 12 program Baylor in Week 1 before dominating Southern Miss 43-8 on Saturday.
Following the Gators' win over Campbell on Saturday, head coach Jon Sumrall told reporters he wasn't happy with the level of play his team showed in the first two weeks, noting things would get tougher in the SEC.
"I'm not really pleased with maybe where we are from a maturity standpoint, executing at a really high level all the time,'' Sumrall said, via the Gators. "What we're about to walk into in conference play, we will get absolutely embarrassed if we don't improve a ton.
"Some guys proved maybe in the second half, you get an opportunity to prove people right or wrong; some guys proved us right [about] why they're not playing."
Another issue for Florida is penalties. The Gators were penalized eight times for 95 yards against Campbell. That will be a focus for Sumrall to correct this week.
"The second half, every time you felt like we had an explosive play, there's another penalty flag,'' Sumrall said. "You can't do that. The Gators can't beat the Gators. I expect every player on our team … to play to the standard that is a Florida Gator.
"I don't care if you're a first-, second-, or third-team player; there is a standard here. It's non-negotiable. I think maybe some guys learned tonight what readiness looks like isn't quite where they are."
Another issue Florida will need to address is turnovers. The Gators committed two turnovers in their win over Campbell on Saturday. Those mistakes will only be amplified when they play tougher competition in the SEC.
Clean football will be key for a young Gators team to pave a path to be a competitor in the conference.
