Florida HC Jon Sumrall Makes Head-Turning Comment on Tim Tebow

New Florida head coach Jon Sumrall has questions about the quarterback position this offseason.

With DJ Lagway set to play for Baylor, Sumrall needs to sort out the signal-caller for 2026.

Sumrall is set to have a quarterback battle between Tramell Jones, Aidan Warner, Will Griffin, and Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo. Philo is joining new Gators offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, who was his offensive coordinator at GT.

Sumrall had to watch as Florida's SEC rival, Tennessee, obtained a temporary restraining order that could allow quarterback Joey Aguilar to be granted a sixth year of eligibility.

On Wednesday, Sumrall joked about bringing back Florida legend Tim Tebow to play quarterback for the Gators after seeing Aguilar has a chance to play a sixth season.

“We’re going to file a temporary restraining order to bring back Tim Tebow,” Sumrall said, via On3. “I don’t know what the hell is going on with all of that. We’ll see if Tebow gets his years back.”

Tebow exhausted all of his years of eligibility during his time with Florida from 2006 to 2009. He appeared in 55 games and started in 41 games, helping the Gators to win national championships in 2006 and 2008.

Tebow, arguably one of the greatest college quarterbacks of all time, won the Heisman Trophy in 2007.

Tebow finished his career with 9,286 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. He added 2,947 yards and 57 touchdowns on the ground.

The Denver Broncos selected Tebow with the No. 25 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Tebow proved his loyalty by returning to Florida for his fourth season in 2009 instead of leaving early for the NFL. The former quarterback has been outspoken about college football becoming too selfish with rule changes and the NIL.

“I know we live in a selfish culture where it's all about us, but we're just adding and piling it on to that where it changes what’s special about college football and we turn it into the NFL where who has the most money that’s where you go,” said Tebow on ESPN, via USA Today.

“That’s why people are more passionate about college sports than they are about the NFL. That's why the stadiums are bigger in college than the NFL because it's about your team, about your university, about where my family wanted to go."

Tebow won't be returning to Gainesville to play football anytime soon, but it would be interesting if Sumrall tries to get him more involved with the program.
