Jon Sumrall is ditching rebuilding timelines and demanding immediate urgency, vowing to awaken a sleeping giant while pushing the Florida Gators to hunt victories every time they take the field.
The cupboard wasn't barren at Florida for new head coach Jon Sumrall.
The Gators have enough talent to compete in the SEC and earn bowl eligibility. However, the team needs to add elite help in the trenches and at quarterback before UF is ready to win a national championship.
Title expectations would be too lofty for Sumrall in his first season at Florida, but the team has a chance to build something special in 2026.
During an interview Action Sports Jax, Sumrall revealed what his standard is with players for the upcoming season. The Gators expect to make a bowl game, and they won't go into a contest planning to lose.
“I've got an expectation to win every game we play," Sumrall said. "That's my expectation. I'm not comfortable with anybody going, 'Hey, how many games are you comfortable winning this year?' If anybody tells me, 'Hey, bowl eligible,' I'm like, 'Yeah, we better be. Or I'll be on top of the stadium getting ready to do something stupid.'
"You have to have urgency every day. I think as soon as you put a ceiling or a cap on what you can do and start to think with limits in mind, you're automatically handicapping yourself. And so for me, man, our expectation is for our guys to expect to win every freaking time we take the field.”
Following the Orange and Blue Game, Sumrall expressed his intensity for making Florida a winner. He believes UF can build the program up fast, and knows he has to win at recruiting to make the Gators a title contender.
"This is a sleeping giant," Sumrall said. "I’m telling you right now, it ain’t a matter of if we’re gonna win here. It’s how fast we’re gonna win. It’s coming. This winning thing, it’s coming.
"Now, I’m not patient. I want it to happen every day. But we are going to land some pieces in recruiting. We’re about to do some things that I think and build a roster here that is going to bring it back to where we all want it to be."
Sumrall understands the Gators need some key additions through recruiting to take the next step. Still, after a 4-8 season, a bowl game would be good progress for Florida with a shaky quarterback situation.
