Jon Sumrall is off to a very hot start as head coach of the Florida Gators, having put together an impressive transfer portal haul while also hitting the recruiting trail.
But we need to keep relativity in mind here.
Sumrall is taking over a team that went just 4-8 last season and has posted four losing campaigns over the last five years, so it might take some time to turn the program around for the better.
The former Tulane head coach also erred on the side of caution when discussing his roster recently, revealing that it has become more difficult to fill holes without the spring transfer portal window.
"We don't have the luxury of that second window now, so that's a little bit more daunting," Sumrall told reporters. "I'm not gonna have any opportunity to watch this team practice and go correct in the second portal. We've just got to go watch them practice, then try to fix it if it's wrong, make somebody better, or maybe move guys around. That's a little bit more unnerving."

"I would be okay if they gave us an emergency second portal window in May to make sure, after Spring Ball, I knew what we had," Sumrall said.
It's certainly odd that the NCAA decided to rid itself of the spring portal window rather than the one in January, considering bowl games and the College Football Playoff are underway during the winter.
Of course, there is the idea that teams could have their players stolen in the spring, which definitely complicates things when it comes to roster building. But perhaps reaching a middle ground and having the portal in February would satisfy everyone.
Regardless, it seems that Sumrall is not entirely sure of his roster heading into 2026, and that's completely understandable. Again, this Florida team wasn't good this past season, although the Gators have also experienced significant turnover this winter.
At this point, Sumrall is just going to have to make it work with what he currently has at his disopsal.
