Florida, Jon Sumrall Land Massive Ranking Despite Transfer Portal Exodus cover image

Jon Sumrall and the Florida Gators have landed themselves an intriguing ranking in the transfer portal.

Jon Sumrall surely knew that he would lose a whole bunch of players upon taking the Florida Gators head-coaching job. It's only natural.

But did he really expect to see 31 players depart via the transfer portal? Perhaps not.

In fact, Sumrall ended up convincing two important players to stay, swaying running back Jadan Baugh and edge rusher Jayden Woods away from the portal and back to Gainesville.

So the damage could have been much worse.

Regardless, Florida has obviously absorbed a massive blow in the transfer portal, but Sumrall has also done an incredible job of adding talent.

Sumrall has done so well, actually, that On 3 has ranked the Gators' transfer portal haul eighth among teams across the country.

Florida has bagged commitments from 21 players in the transfer portal, including pair of four-star talents in wide receiver Eric Singleton Jr. and tight end Luke Harpring.

The Gators went just 4-8 in 2025 and have posted four losing campaigns over the past five years, representing one of the worst stretches in the history of the program.

Billy Napier failed miserably at Florida, resulting in his midseason firing this past season. The Gators then hired Sumrall in late November.

Sumrall had previously split four years between Troy and Tulane, going 43-12. His best showing came in 2025, when he led Tulane to an 11-3 record and a College Football Playoff appearance.

Of course, going from smaller schools like Troy and Tulane to a well-known SEC program represents a massive change and a major challenge.

We will have to see if Sumrall is up for it, especially considering the burden that comes with becoming the new head coach of a school with such a huge fan base.

Not only that, but Gators fans are starving for some success, so Sumrall is facing incomprehensible pressure to turn the program around.

But based on how Sumrall has handled himself upon taking the job and the response he has gotten for his work in the portal, it seems safe to say that Florida is in good hands.

That being said, the jury is still out on Sumrall.

We'll see if the 43-year-old can add even more pieces the rest of the offseason.
