Jon Sumrall’s recruiting heater continues as the Gators trend toward landing versatile cornerback Kamauri Whitfield, potentially beating out Oregon and Nebraska for the elite in-state playmaker.

The Florida Gators and head coach Jon Sumrall are off to one of the best starts in the 2027 recruiting cycle this offseason.

Since arriving at the program back in December, the former Tulane Green Wave head coach has put together a consensus top-10 recruiting class in the 2027 cycle, with the Gators landing 24 commits. This includes the No. 1 offensive tackle prospect in five-star Maxwell Hiller, along with multiple four-star talents, such as quarterback Davin Davidson and wide receiver Elias Pearl. However, Sumrall’s incredible run in the upcoming recruiting class may be far from over.

On Tuesday, 247Sports’ Zach Blostein and Tyler Harden gave 2027 three-star cornerback Kamauri Whitfield a crystal ball prediction to land with Florida over the likes of the Oregon Ducks and the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Could Florida, Sumrall Land Whitfield?

Whitfield, a talented in-state recruit, has been on Sumrall’s radar since joining the program this offseason. As of this month, the underrated defensive back is the No. 59-ranked prospect in the state of Florida, as well as the No. 72-ranked cornerback in the 2027 recruiting class, according to 247Sports’ Composite.

Throughout his three seasons at The First Academy in Orlando, FL, Whitfield was a key part of the defensive effort, recording 81 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 12 pass deflections, and 1 interception. In addition to his stout performances on the defensive side of the ball, the versatile prospect also racked up 141 receiving yards on nine receptions, proving himself to be a dynamic playmaker when on the field.

After attending Florida’s Junior Day back in January, Sumrall and the coaching staff were quick to offer the up-and-coming defensive back. And earlier this summer, Whitfield also took an official visit to Gainesville, while also making two stops in Nebraska and Oregon this month. But luckily for the Gators, his time at Florida has seemingly helped the program secure his commitment, which is set to take place on Jul 6.

Looking at the rest of Sumrall’s first-ever recruiting class with the Gators, Whitfield would be the third cornerback to commit to Florida, as he would join a pair of four-star commits in Amare Nugent and Aamaury Fountain.
