Josh Pate believes Jon Sumrall can lead Florida to the College Football Playoff, leveraging existing talent and championship-era inspiration.

Florida: Josh Pate Makes National Championship Comment About Jon Sumrall

Josh Pate gave Florida head coach Billy Napier the benefit of the doubt until he couldn't anymore.

Napier and UF made some strides at the end of the 2024 season that gave the fan base some hope that better days were coming for the program.

In 2025, Florida regressed, finishing with a 4-8 season despite having several future NFL players in the starting lineup.

New head coach Jon Sumrall received a lot of attention when he led Tulane to the College Football Playoff last season. Sumrall is saying all of the right things in public, and it seems the Gators are destined to turn things around soon.

During his show Sunday, Pate noted that Florida has plenty of talent on the current roster for Sumrall to win games in the fall.

“You just got to pull them," Pate said. "Florida's had four straight top 15 classes. So Napier, even though they didn't win enough on the field, he was getting the players.

"They had the infrastructure in place. That infrastructure is still in place. I think they've put together a really good front office."

Pate doesn't think Sumrall will be competing for a national championship in Year 1, but believes "in general" that he will get Florida to the College Football Playoff in the future.

"We were down there last week talking to a number of those guys," Pate said. "I think they've got the right people in the building. I already thought that.

"You just got to have the right leader in the building. And so I think that again for what it's worth. And my predictions on Florida leadership have not been worth a lot over the past few years.”

Sumrall seems a lot different from Napier for several reasons. One, he's really embracing the culture for Florida that made the program great in the past.

Sumrall and legendary head coach Urban Meyer appear to have a strong relationship. Sumrall is taking advice from Meyer, respecting the championship teams that Meyer put on the field during his time at Gainesville.

If his players buy into that culture, UF should be much better.
