Josh Pate ranks Florida's iconic "Swamp" outside the top two SEC stadiums, questioning its current home-field advantage despite its historic potential.

Florida: Josh Pate Ranks 'The Swamp' Behind 2 SEC Program's Stadiums

With a capacity of 88,548 fans, Steve Spurrier–Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium has the potential to be one of the hardest places to go play in college football.

Urban Meyer certainly had the crowd pumping when he was the head coach of Florida. However, "The Swamp" wasn't the most effective when former head coach Billy Napier was putting together a string of losing seasons.

New head coach Jon Sumrall hopes to excite the fan base in 2026, and that could lead to more exciting games at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

During his show on Thursday, Josh Pate ranked Florida's stadium as the No. 5 toughest in college football. The Gators fell behind Tennessee's Neyland Stadium (No. 1) and LSU's Tiger Stadium (No. 2).

"As we call it on the streets, the Swamp at Florida, at its best, is borderline unmatched in college football. Here’s the problem that's very obvious: it hasn't been at its best enough," Pate said.

"So we're kind of creeping further and further down the road where we have to explain to people who are younger why this venue is on this list."

Still, Pate thinks Florida is capable of bringing that spirit back if Sumrall fields more competitive teams.

The noise is one factor, but the weather in Gainesville makes it hard on opposing teams.

"This is one of those few places that also has weather that can regularly creep in and affect how tough it is to play there, because Florida just gets to live in that all year," Pate said.

"Like everything that you would think Tennessee had to deal with traveling to Ohio State a couple of years ago for the playoff when it comes to cold weather.

“Well, if you turn that entirely upside down, you go play in Gainesville, you're liable to have to deal with the opposite end of the meteorological spectrum."

The Gators will play six home games in 2026, starting with FAU on Sept. 5. UF will play a few consequential SEC contests against Ole Miss on Sept. 26, Oklahoma on Nov. 7, and Vanderbilt on Nov. 21.

Maybe Sumrall will have "The Swamp" rocking by November.
