Despite a quarterback vacuum and a losing record, Jon Sumrall’s arrival has ignited Top 25 expectations as the Florida Gators attempt to transform raw talent into SEC contention.
Coming off a 4-8 season in 2025, it would be understandable if many around the country think Florida is set for a mediocre season at best this fall.
The Gators lost quarterback DJ Lagway to Baylor in the transfer portal, putting a big question mark at quarterback that Aaron Philo or Tramell Jones Jr. will have to fill.
However, head coach Jon Sumrall has brought so much enthusiasm to the program that many national outlets think the Gators could crack the Top 25 by the time the first preseason polls are released.
In some sense, it's another hypothetical win for an SEC program. But Sumrall has proven to make quick work out of turning around programs.
Cody Nagel of CBS Sports listed Florida as one of the top programs generating buzz for college football this offseason. To live up to the hype, Sumrall will have to get the best out of a talented roster that decided to stay on after Napier was fired.
"Let's stay in the Sunshine State, where there's a new coach buzz for the Gators in The Swamp," Nagel wrote. "Jon Sumrall arrives in Gainesville with a proven track record, owning a 43–12 career mark that includes a trip to the College Football Playoff last season. Florida retained a number of talented pieces from the previous staff's recruiting classes, but now it's on Sumrall to extract more from a roster that has underachieved relative to its talent level.
"The quarterback battle remains unsettled, with Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo and redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. still competing for the job heading into the season. Florida will need someone to separate early in fall camp."
While the hype is good for the program right now, at least in terms of recruiting, it's a little unfair to pressure Sumrall to take UF to the CFP in Year 1.
There are legitimate issues with the roster, starting at quarterback and on the offensive line, and Sumrall has made it a priority to address those issues in recruiting right away.
Winning seven or eight games would be a positive sign of progress. Anything more than that would be gravy.
