Jon Sumrall aims to fast-track a Florida Gators revival, but surviving a brutal gauntlet against Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma remains the ultimate litmus test for Florida’s playoff ambitions.
New Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall is not patient.
Sumrall wants to rebuild the Gators as fast as possible. That doesn't mean he's not realistic. He noted that UF needs to add several more pieces in the transfer portal and on the recruiting trail before the program is ready to win the national championship.
At a minimum, the Gators need to become bowl-eligible. UF is facing serious challenges, losing quarterback DJ Lagway to Baylor after a 4-8 season in 2025.
The offensive line is still a project.
The Gators have plenty of talent on defense, in the backfield, and at receiver. There is an outside shot Sumrall can develop Florida into a College Football Playoff team in Year 1, but they'll have to pull a few upsets to make that happen.
ESPN thinks UF has a chance to make its first-ever appearance in the CFP, but it will have to survive a tough stretch against Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma in the SEC.
The Gators have never been to the CFP?! Never. After a 4-8 record last year, things should only go up under coach Jon Sumrall. He brought in former Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and transfer quarterback Aaron Philo, also from Tech. The season-defining stretch will be against Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma.
Earlier this week, Sumrall told Damien Harris of CBS Sports that Florida can have immediate success with the people he has currently in the building.
"I think the three things you do is build a winning culture, No. 1, select the right people in the building, and then everyone you've selected, they're yours, and you have to develop them to be their best," Sumrall said.
"When you drill it down and keep it that simple, then my job really gets pretty easy. It's not that complicated because building a winning culture, get the right people here, develop those people... If you do that, and that's all you're thinking about all the time, then I think you have a chance to create quick success."
The CFP would be a nice surprise, but Sumrall shouldn't face pressure to make the tournament in Year 1.
Winning seven or eight games would still be a success in 2026 for Sumrall.
