Florida's new head coach Jon Sumrall reveals how the loss of the spring transfer portal hampers his rebuild, leaving critical roster gaps ahead of a grueling SEC schedule.
Florida head coach Jon Sumrall believes his program can immediately.
For 2026, it's bowl game or bust for the Gators. With the current roster Sumrall has, there's only so much he can do in his first year in Florida, especially with the program playing a rigorous nine-game SEC schedule.
To get Florida to the College Football Playoff, Sumrall believes he needs to hit the recruiting trail hard.
Sumrall also thinks Florida would have been in a better position to compete for the upcoming season if the spring transfer portal was still in place. He noticed issues with some players on UF's roster during spring practice, and would like to bring in competition for training camp this summer.
"As a first-year head coach, I'd love to have the second portal, really," Sumrall told Richard Johnson of CBS Sports. "Now I've seen this team practice, and I may have thought I knew about certain guys, but you know more when you've seen them on the grass live. As an established program, no second portal is very ideal.
"As a program is trying to get jump-started and build the roster in the first year. That second portal window is very useful. For the long haul of the health of college football, we do need one portal, which we have now, and once we get to the other side of rebuilding this thing, I'll be very glad there's one, but in year one, I would gladly accept one for a little reinforcement."
Based on Sumrall's comments, there are some players that the new head coach is worried about being able to produce in his system.
On the flip side, Sumrall didn't have to lose any sleep this spring that he'd lose players on his roster before training camp.
"While we don't have the ability to maybe reinforce or upgrade certain holes we have, you also don't have to worry about renegotiation either," Sumrall said.
"So there's not that lingering threat of the final hour in the April/May window of, like, oh gosh, hold on to your roster, and hopefully guys don't leave, and you've gone through spring ball, and you have to figure out how to replace a guy that you got a lot of reps invested in, that you were counting on."
Year 1 will be about Sumrall laying the groundwork for his culture in Gainesville.
The Gators should be expected to make noticeable improvement from a 4-8 record in 2025, but Sumrall needs to bring in reinforcements before UF starts dreaming about playing deep into January.
