Sumrall knows a number next to his team's name doesn't mean anything right now.
The University of Florida brought in head coach Jon Sumrall to be a complete difference-maker from top to bottom for this program. Sumrall has done a lot of good throughout his college coaching career, and there's hope and expectation that Florida is going to continue to do what it has with him at the helm.
It's tough to say that the Gators are going to continue to play this type of football considering just how well they've played, especially after that 52-28 win against Ole Miss, but for Florida to be the team it's looking to be, that's going to have to continue.
This start to the season has been promising, but things are only going to get more difficult, taking on a ranked Missouri team, Texas, Georgia, Kentucky on the road, and Florida State to end the season, among other games. Sumrall understands that some of these games are going to be very difficult, and if his guys aren't ready to play, losses are going to come.
That includes this weekend against the No. 25-ranked Missouri Tigers.
"You don't hang a banner or get celebrated for where you're ranked between game 4 and 5 in college football," Sumrall said, per the school. "The rankings mean absolutely nothing. And anybody that's feeling really good about us being ranked wherever we're ranked, it means nothing to me. It really doesn't mean anything until after the last game is played."
"If we think it’s gonna be a freaking cake walk, I don’t care if it's homecoming or whatever, we’re in for a rude awakening," Sumrall said. "We’ve got to get ready to play a really good football team on the road in a place that’s not gone well for us a lot, recently, the most recent history. So, I’m really worried about that. I don’t care who their homecoming king, or queen, or any of that is.”
My favorite part about Sumrall is that he's never content. He isn't somebody who is unhappy with how his team played, so to say, but he's not going to sit here and throw a party because Florida is currently the eighth-ranked team in America.
He understands that when he was brought in to coach the Gators, the expectation was for him to win in the SEC and win a national title.
Anything less than that will be viewed as a disappointment, especially for a guy with his type of outlook.
