Golden State targets Florida's coach amid uncertainty. Could this rising star trade the Gators for the league's brightest lights?
Florida head coach Todd Golden was immediately linked to North Carolina after the Tar Heels fired Hubert Davis in March.
There wasn't much smoke that came out between Golden and UNC. Golden, who won the national championship in 2025, won't be leaving for another college baskbetball job before next season.
However, the NBA could come calling soon.
Per Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo Sports, the Golden State Warriors are expected to go after Golden if head coach Steve Kerr parts ways with the team this offseason.
Per Graham Hall of 247 Sports, the Warriors would owe Florida a $2 million buyout if they hired him.
After Friday night's loss to Phoenix in the Play-In Tournament, Kerr told reporters he was unsure if he'd return to coach the Warriors next season. On Monday, Draymond Green predicted Kerr would not return.
Fans on X responded to the report that the Warriors want Golden. Most think it would be a mistake for him to leaf Florida.
"The NBA has got to be every bball coaches dream so any opportunity would’ve hard to turn down.. but the Warriors are a few seasons away from a complete rebuild with their stars pushing 40," wrote a fan.
"Yeah... Nah. Warriors would have been in unofficial contact with Golden months ago and we likely would have seen more than just rioux and handlogten transfer out," posted another.
"Golden would have informed them. I would take this more seriously if it weren't for Aberdeen coming back for Golden."
"I’m biased but I don’t get the attraction to the NBA in 2026. It’s a shell of its former self. It will be there for Coach down the line. Hope he stays," wrote another.
"living in California around San Francisco with his salary for being a head coach, he would be paying approximately 53% of that $$ back in taxes," suggested a fan.
"You never want to be the guy who follows THE GUY. Todd should have another year of great hoops in the sunshine state. Way better jobs will be available to him in the next couple years," believes a poster.
